April 2008 - New amateur radio search engine goes online

A new internet search engine has been launched with particular emphasis on amateur radio. www.CQoogle.com retrieves results from all the major search engines, such as google, MSN, yahoo, ask and jeeves, then filters the results for ham radio related content and only displays those results.

April 18 2008 - RSGB closed from 21st to 25th April

The RSGB will be completely closed from noon Friday 18 April until Friday 25 April. This is due to our relocation from Potters Bar to Bedford. During this time staff will be unable to answer telephone calls or provide any other services. Normal operations should be resumed on Monday 28 April but we would ask members to delay any non-urgent business until Wednesday 30 April if possible.

There will be no updates to the RSGB web site during 21-25 April. There will also not be a GB2RS bulletin on Sunday 27 April.

The RSGB apologises for any inconvenience.

March 2008 - Another club gains Lottery funding

Newbury and District Amateur Radio Society (NADARS) has been awarded a grant of nearly £10,000 under the National Lottery's Awards for All programme. NARDARS are to use the money to run license training courses, provide amateur radio awareness exhibitions and demonstrations at local events, operate mobile stations for emergency planning and of course for the benefit of members.

This was highlighted back in May 2006

GB7YD-2 2 meter repeater on air

The South Yorkshire Repeater Group are proud to announce that the first Dstar 2 meter repeater GB7YD-C in England went in to service at 17.45 on 15th February 2008.

It is running on low power with an assortment of cavities in both RX and TX lines. Reports are welcome.

Thanks to all who have given their time.

The repeater will go in to full service as soon as cavity parts arrive from TX/RX systems in the USA. These are currently awaiting customs clearance at Stansted Airport.

SOS Radio Week 2008

The 2008 SOS Radio Week will take place between the 19th and 25th January.

Last year a group of Radio Amateurs from around the UK got themselves sponsored for the number of contacts they made in the week leading up to SOS Day and raised over £400 for the RNLI. Derek Hughes (G7LFC), one of the event's orgainsers, would love to see more Radio Amateurs take part in 2008 and has set a target of raising £1,400

This year we'd like to raise lots more money and with your help we can, either individually, or as part of a group. All you need to do is register to take part on the Southport ARC web site (sadarc.org.uk/rnlisos) and download the sponsorship forms and log sheets. You get yourselves sponsored to make as many contacts as you can between 00:00 (UTC) on 19th January, 2008, and 23:59 on 25th January, 2008 (RNLI SOS Day). Details about submitting your collected monies can be found on the site and you can submit your log sheets to us to receive a commemorative certificate - special awards will also be made to the most contacts made (group and individual) and most money raised (group and individual).

This is a great way for newly licensed Radio Amateurs to get on the air and meet new friends, whilst supporting one of the UK and Ireland's most respected charities.

Thank you for your help - it is most appreciated.

See the RNLI SOS Day website for more info.

Are we missing out on a lottery grant?

Many amateur radio clubs in the UK are missing out on thousands of pounds in grants because they fail to put in bids for Lottery money.

Although it can take some time to organise a lottery bid, the benefits of doing so can be huge. Barnsley-based South Yorkshire Amateur Radio Society, for example, recently received £4,913 in grants through the Lottery's Awards for All programme.

The club is using the money to expand its educational programme and raise interest in amateur radio and science in general in the local community. It will be running a series of presentations and workshops on radio-related subjects for local schools and community groups.

Thanks to the lottery grant, the club has been able to invest in modern teaching aids, including a number of networked laptop computers.

Other clubs are encouraged to follow South Yorkshire Amateur Radio Society's lead and put in lottery bids.

The rewards can be immense.
