This evening, members were treated to an introduction to D-STAR (Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio) by Rob Berry - A relatively new digital voice and data protocol, D-STAR compatible radios are available on VHF and UHF and microwave amateur radio bands. A new page has been added to the club website giving basic information on this digital mode.

The interface for digital modes was successfully commissioned this evening and the first club QSO on PSK31 was completed. The shack has now been sectioned with three specific areas. One for HF, one for HF digital modes and one for VHF. It is hoped that having the equipment permanently set up will allow members to easily use the equipment and try out new modes of transmission.

Tuesday 7th April  2009

Although we did not officially enter, some members took part in the VHFCC 2m radio contest for the first time, which is held on the first Tuesday each month. We had good results considering the club currently only has a tri-band vertical for 6m 2m and 70cm. We hope to erect a 2m beam and rotator soon for better results on SSB.

Tuesday 10th March  2009

This evening we had a demonstration of PSK31 in action. This mode of transmission was developed by Peter Martinez (G3PLX) and introduced to the amateur radio community in December 1998. Very little equipment - in addition to a standard radio transceiver - is required to use PSK31. Normally an old PC and a few cables will suffice. The software is both free to download and runs happily on old, slow computers.

You can read more about PSK31 at the official PSK31 website.

NARC 2nd Open Evening. The event built on the success of the previous open evening and was well attended with around 50 members and their guests. The club shack was officially opened by the Mayor of Wigan, Councillor John O'Brien, who has a military communications background although not a licensed amateur. All the club equipment was on display for visitors and guests to view. Literature and M3 course information was available for anyone interested in becoming licensed. Again we had several enquiries regarding training courses and club membership. Everyone was well fed and thanks go out to Peter Cain for the magnificent spread. Photos of the evening can be found in the gallery.
